Women in politics- A sad state of our times :
This past week on Y Media TV channel, while discussing on Atishi and her becoming the new CM of Delhi, the host who had done a very meticulous research spend considerable time in mentioning the names of 15 previous women CMs of India starting from Ms. Kriplani in erstwhile UP.
It was great to hear those names and yet I found it equally sad that in 77 years, we could just count 15 named in 28 states.
And the sad thing is that we call ourselves “progressive” and feel ‘proud” in “supporting” that.
Why?
Women represent 50% of the population world over and yet is there any pride when their representation at the “top” is “token”?
Why should a woman be badass or be doubly loud in expressing all her capabilities and yet be “thankful” if she reaches the top and yet be called names?
The “childless cat lady” may find it difficult to become the President of USA only because she is a woman!
Why should there be a bill tabled in Parliament for women reservation that too less than one third and that too just as a token and is made to stay in cold storage now for donkeys years?
Atishi deserved 100% to be the CM based on her accomplishments and if AAP wins, has all the right to get a full term and a fair chance. Yet she has been made only a token.
This week was also my daughter’s birthday and she is one of the brightest, boldest, fearless human on earth who knows exactly what she wants.
More power to her and many like her and if in this lifetime we can be a small catalyst in supporting ‘true” representation of women at the top, then we, ungrateful and dominating men, would have for once done something to repent our past sins of centuries.
This is what I said yesterday but hope we are able to open our eyes, support and not connive to stop women of power and make world a better place.
A woman truly can provide love and empathy to reduce hate.
Amen!
